This Year In Popular Gifts - 1989 - Polly Pocket
The phenomenal Polly Pocket launched in 1989. These tiny dolls became a staple of kids in the late 80's and early 90's.
The toy was created by Chris Wiggs in 1983 for his daughter. She loved dolls and Chris wanted to create something for his daughter that she could carry around. He modeled a case out of a powder compact to make a tiny house and a doll sized to fit in that.
In 1989 the Polly Pocket toy was officially licensed by Bluebird Toys. They small plastic shells contained their own little dream-world that could fit in your pocket. And some dream-world it was. In 1989 there were over thirty five Polly Pocket toys and accessories. Polly had an Apartment, Beach House, Town House, a Country Cottage, a Café, and an amusement park just to name a few.
While the toy was very successful for many years eventually the appeal wore off. Bluebird Toys was eventually purchased by Mattel in 1998. In 1999 they relaunched the toys but increased the size of the dolls from 1 inch to 3 3⁄4 inches and changed the line of clothing to be able to be removed and changed.
After three children in 2006 swallowed the small magnets that fell off the toys, Mattel recalled 4.4 million Polly Pocket toys. Customers would receive a voucher that could be used to purchase a replacement toy without the magnet separation issue.
Mattel relaunched the Polly Pocket line in 2010 to mixed reviews. The dolls now had a child like appearance instead of older look teen/young adult look of the original. Mattel has not produced any new Polly Pocket toys since 2015.
